[Don't be taken in by 3 roller mills with an unnecessary feed roller that just looks fancy. There is actually no such thing as a three roller mill in brewing.

There are lots of good grain mills out there. A few that will work with this project are: The Barley Crusher (7 15lb versions) Monster Mill. Captain Crush Grain Mill. Most grain mills come with a hand crank. Removing the crank arm exposes the shaft which usually fits into the chuck of a power drill.

At 115 it's not a small investment, but grain mills can easily get above 200 so it's not on the higher end of the price range. It comes with a 7 lb capacity aluminum hopper. If you want a 15 lb hopper, the total cost comes to 138. I decided to save 23 and do the minimal extra effort of refilling the smaller hopper.

The mill only works when you turn it a specific direction, clockwise I believe. I've never used a grain mill myself in the past, so I did a 10# batch and realized it wasn't crushed at all. Had to mess around with it to figure out. Since there are no instructions that came with the unit, this was a little frustrating.

When I received my monster mill with hardened steel rollers, the first thing I noticed was how much more heavy duty it was. They second thing I noticed is that I could mill 40# of grain in no more than 23 minutes (if that).

Just a short history about that Barley Crusher. When I started my home brew store years ago I only had my Barley Crusher to mill grain with. I had had it for about 34 years prior crushing only my grain at home. I started the store and needed a crusher but didn't have the to buy a real good industrial one so I used it.

I think the Barley Crusher Grain Mill is still the best bang for the buck at, well at Northern Brewer anyways, about 10 bucks more than when I bought mine 2 years ago come July. It comes with everything pictured, unlike the expensive mills where everything comes separately. Here it is sittin atop my 5G Lowe's bucket, which seems to fit the base tighter than the orange Home Depot bucket.

Monster Mill and Barley Crusher are good choices, nearly indestructible and popular with home brewers. The choice depends on your budget, system requirements (especially lautering) and any degree of automation you may wish to add. I have a Barley Crusher that is 4 years old, I have oiled her and taken great care of her but now she won't crush. The free wheel won't spin to get the crush started. ... I'll also add another negative for Barley Crusher. About a month ago I was brewing at a friend's house. He was brewing a 10 gallon batch and I had a 5 gallon. His mill is a Barley Crusher with the heavy Harbor Freight corded drill. Before we started, I pointed out that his rollers weren't parallel, with a much bigger gap at one end.

Unlike the Corona Mill its actually meant for grain with a large hopper. It does the same thing as a Monster mill for 1/3 of the price. It lasts. I've had mine for 5 years and it works like new after 100's and 100's of pounds of grain, 25 pounds at a time. It only costs around 90 if you get it on sale.
